When FASTag became mandatory for commercial vehicles in February 2021, most fleet owners treated it as just another box to tick. But once you are past the setup stage, FASTag is one of the simplest ways to bring real visibility to toll costs — which, on a long-haul truck doing 8,000–10,000 km a month, are not small.
There is no ambiguity here. FASTag is mandatory for all National Permit vehicles — trucks, tankers, trailers, buses. The rules are firm:
FASTag validity from date of issue — after which the tag stops working and must be replaced.
Toll penalty charged in cash if your truck arrives at a plaza without a working FASTag.
One FASTag per vehicle — no sharing, no transfers between trucks under any circumstance.
You can get FASTag from any authorised issuer — NHAI toll plazas, most major banks (SBI, HDFC, ICICI, Axis, Kotak, IDFC), Paytm Payments Bank, and even some petrol pumps. For new trucks, dealerships typically issue the tag before delivery — but always verify it has been properly linked to the correct RC before the first trip.
Do KYC in one go. It can be done at the counter or online via the issuer's app. Incomplete KYC limits your transaction amount and can lead to blacklisting later — do not leave it pending.
Managing individual FASTag wallets for 10, 20, or 50 trucks is a genuine operational problem. Recharging each separately, tracking which ones are low, reconciling toll deductions per vehicle for client billing — it becomes a part-time job for someone in your team.

FASTag wallets can be recharged through multiple channels. For fleet accounts, bulk transfers from your company account are the cleanest option.
Commercial vehicles are typically required to maintain a balance equal to at least the toll fee at the highest-toll plaza on their regular route. If the wallet dips below this threshold, some plazas will flag the tag and may reject it — your driver then pays cash at double the rate.
For long-haul routes with high toll values, maintain this buffer above the minimum balance. It is a small thing that prevents a lot of on-road friction and double-toll cash payments.
KYC links the FASTag to the registered vehicle owner. Without it, serious restrictions apply:
KYC is a one-time process. Log in to your bank's FASTag portal, submit the RC, owner PAN or Aadhaar, and vehicle photos. Most issuers process it within 24–48 hours. Do not leave it pending — the restricted limit will cause problems at the first major toll.
A blacklisted FASTag gets rejected at toll plazas. Your driver has no choice but to pay double in cash, and the disputed transaction creates reconciliation work later.

Prevention is simpler than cure: Set up automated low-balance alerts on your fleet account portal — SMS or email at configurable thresholds. Most blacklisting cases are avoidable with a basic alert system in place.
India is actively piloting GNSS (satellite-based) tolling on national highways, where toll is calculated based on the actual distance your vehicle travels — not fixed charges at physical plazas. Selected NH stretches are already under trial, with a phased rollout signalled across the network.
Trucks are already required under AIS 140 regulations to carry a GPS tracking device. That same device — already on your truck — will form the basis for GNSS toll calculation. Distance-based tolling should reduce overall toll costs for short-haul operators who currently pay full plaza charges for partial stretches.
Operational advantage: Fleet operators whose GPS and trip data are already well-organised will have a significant edge when GNSS rolls out. Platforms that consolidate vehicle tracking, trip records, and toll data will handle GNSS reconciliation automatically rather than forcing manual processes.
